• Register to vote in NY State. Qualifications to Register to Vote in NY: be a United States citizen; be 18 years old (you may pre-register at 16 or 17 but cannot vote until you are 18); resident of this state and the county, city or village for at least 30 days before the election; not be in prison for a felony conviction; not be adjudged mentally incompetent by a court; not claim the right to vote elsewhere.

• Register to vote anywhere in the United States.

• Become a pollworker in Tompkins County.

• Volunteer to make voting easier for others through Parents2Polls Tompkins.

• Join the Tompkins County Chapter of the League of Women Voters, a nonpartisan political organization, which encourages informed and active participation in government, works to increase understanding of major public policy issues, and influences public policy through education and advocacy. Any person of voting age, may become a League member.

• Join the Latino Civic Association of Tompkins County, whose mission is to foster a united Latino community, strengthen Latino identity, and promote solidarity,
​cultural pride and civic engagement.

• Get involved with voting efforts on campus through Cornell Votes and Ithaca College Votes

• Preregister to vote! In New York State, if you’re 16 or 17 you can “preregister” to vote and you will be automatically registered when you turn 18. Find out if you can preregister to vote in your state.

NY Voter Registration Deadlines

June 28, 2022 Primary Election Deadlines

MAIL REGISTRATION (N.Y. Election Law Section 5-210(3))
Application must be postmarked no later than June 3, 2022 and received by a board of elections no later than June 8, 2022 to be eligible to vote in the Primary.

IN PERSON REGISTRATION (N.Y. Election Law Sections 5-210, 5-211, 5-212)
You may register at your local board of elections or any state agency participating in the National Voter Registration Act, on any business day throughout the year but, to be eligible to vote in the State and Local Primary, your application must be received no later than June 3, 2022.

CHANGE OF ADDRESS (N.Y. Election Law Section 5-208(3))
Notices of change of address from registered voters received by June 8, 2022 by a county board of elections must be processed and entered in the records in time for the Primary.

CHANGE OF ENROLLMENT (N.Y. Election Law Section 5-304(3))
An application to change one’s party enrollment for any primary election in 2022 must be received by the board of elections no later than February 14, 2022.

November 8, 2022 General Election Deadlines

MAIL REGISTRATION (N.Y. Election Law Section 5-210(3))
Applications must be postmarked no later than October 14, 2022 and received by a board of elections no later than October 19, 2022 to be eligible to vote in the General Election.

IN PERSON REGISTRATION (N.Y. Election Law Sections 5-210, 5-211, 5-212)
You may register at your local board of elections or any state agency participating in the National Voter Registration Act, on any business day throughout the year but, to be eligible to vote in the General Election, your application must be received no later than October 14, 2022. If honorably discharged from the US Military or have become a naturalized US Citizen after October 14, 2022, you may register in person at the Board of Elections up until October 29, 2022.

Notices of change of address from registered voters received by October 19, 2022 by a county board of elections must be processed and entered in the records in time for the General Election.

2022 Voting by Absentee Ballot Deadlines

FOR PRIMARY ELECTION

June 13 Last day to postmark an application or letter of application by mail, or send an email or fax for an absentee ballot.
June 27 Last day to apply IN-PERSON for absentee ballot.
June 28 Last day to postmark ballot. Must be received by the local board of elections no later than July 5th.
June 28 Last day to deliver ballot IN-PERSON to the local board of elections (by someone other than the voter).

FOR GENERAL ELECTION

Oct 24 Last day for board of elections to receive an application or letter of application by mail, online portal, email or fax for an absentee ballot.
Nov 7 Last day to apply IN-PERSON for absentee ballot.
Nov 8 Last day to postmark ballot. Must be received by the local board of elections no later than Nov. 15th. Military Voter Ballots must be received no later than Nov. 21st.
Nov 8 Last day to deliver ballot IN-PERSON to the local board of elections or to any poll site in your county.
